We were pioneers when, way back in 1999, we wondered how to enable any organization to independently develop business process management that could easily adapt to multiple organizational situations. It was a fascinating question at the time, but not yet urgent: the Internet was just beginning to boom, Google had just been founded, cell phones were only for communication, and innovation wasn't at the frenetic pace it is today.
We could still afford to develop applications in traditional, expensive ways, counting on their slow obsolescence. It was driven by that demand that in 2002 we entered the world of workflow and became the first in Italy to develop a platform still used today by over 500 companies and public administrations. We were incredulous and elated when the IT Manager at the Rosen (now Engie) power plant in Rosignano Solvay decided to adopt the Openwork platform to manage some business processes and meet some needs that SAP was unable to meet. We had hit the mark and, shortly thereafter, in 2004, we would materialize our work with the formulation of our first BPM .
Nearly 20 years later, information technology is everywhere. The incredible speed with which connections are established and information is propagated between people, software systems, and now even objects is completely redefining society and the economy. Technological innovation no longer spreads from businesses to people (the computer was conceived for business use and then massively adopted by private individuals), but from people to businesses . In this scenario, organizations and their managers are increasingly pressured to adapt processes to ever-changing business needs and the demands of users who must achieve increasingly challenging objectives.
Those responsible for managing an organization's IT infrastructure, having to balance speed, agility, and control, seem to be competing in a race where the finish line is constantly being moved forward: to win, you have to be faster than those who move the finish line. As if to exorcise the phenomenon, attempts are being made to circumscribe it by coining new terms like Bimodal-IT or Citizen Development. These terms resonate with the question that Openwork posed as the foundation of its mission, which is now more relevant than ever. Managing business processes no longer means structuring, monitoring, and streamlining the exchange of information between people within an organization: rather, it means managing complexity in a world where organizations increasingly identify as a set of internal and external agents—that is, people, other organizations, services, processes, and objects. A new approach to information systems is therefore needed : no longer a set of monolithic applications, but a set of highly specialized services that can be orchestrated in a structured and centralized manner, or even freely by the users themselves, albeit within a controlled environment. New methodologies and technologies such as the Intelligent Business Process Management System (iBPMS), Case Management, and Adaptive Integration have been developed specifically to support these scenarios.
Over the years, we've invested heavily in research and development, seeking to integrate and abstract complexity for the benefit of organizations and citizen developers . This led to the creation of the Jamio openwork application development platform, whose name is inspired by the jam session. Just as a group of musicians with different instruments meet without rehearsing and manage to produce pleasing and engaging sounds, so too, with Jamio openwork, we've integrated and abstracted complexity and technology for the benefit of citizen developers.
Jamio openwork is much more than a BPM platform: it's a tool that enables organizations to transition to a new information system model, toward the Extended Enterprise. Once again, almost twenty years later, we feel like pioneers and proud advocates of an innovative, all-Italian way of doing things.

Why choose an Openwork Magazine?
Even though communication is now experiencing new horizons thanks to social media, it is important for a manufacturer to maintain a direct connection with all stakeholders through an authoritative and engaging institutional tool. It is right that the tens of thousands of people who use Openwork technology every day can have the opportunity to experience firsthand the fact that behind that "immaterial technology" are people at work who, with passion, hard work, study, research, and dedication, have been working for years to realize a truly cutting-edge challenge: changing the way we approach the development of software solutions, leading to zero-code . This is what Openwork has managed to do by bringing its new product, Jamio openwork, to market, making it accessible as a cloud , therefore as a Platform as a Service .
Issue after issue, we discover that behind the cloud—that is, behind a managed service—is a structured organization, organized like a "classic" industry. While it's true that cloud is synonymous with "elusive, intangible," in reality, many people and a great deal of "materiality" lie behind it: just think of the infrastructures on which the services run, the Software Engineering that develops them, the Product Management that designs the evolutionary roadmap, the people who manage service delivery and guarantee the SLA, the Program Managers and Project Managers engaged in the development of the many Jamio openwork projects, and finally the Customer Service team that ensures constant assistance and support to the entire customer base.
Not to mention the ' Sales & Marketing' team, which positions products and projects on the market, and the 'Administration, Finance and Control ' team, which is responsible for finding the resources that power the entire machine.
All this is Openwork today: for you, for your work.

Manufacturing: the Base Protection success story

How do you reorganize the people working in a rapidly expanding company? How do you streamline interactions among them, overcoming obstacles caused by staff being spread across multiple, distant locations, ensuring secure information sharing, and facilitating collaboration between departments? And how do you monitor activities , integrate the various company systems in use, and generally optimize processes ? These were the challenges that, in 2015, Base Protection of Barletta (BAT), a company specializing in the production and marketing of anti-fatigue work shoes, faced in order to sustain its business development and optimize human and financial resources.
At that time, digitalization and smart manufacturing were already being discussed, but Industry 4.0 incentives had not yet been launched, and attention to these issues was still relatively low. The company therefore decided to leverage the technological innovations already available and boldly leverage them to redesign its new product design and industrialization processes. The perfect fit of the solutions developed by Openwork to address these challenges did the rest. Thus was born the collaborative project between Base Protection and Openwork, based on the based BPM platform , which remodeled, optimized, and facilitated the development of the Barletta-based company's manufacturing operations. The results achieved were clear: Base Protection significantly reduced product pre-industrialization times, reduced credit management times by 80%, and cut product certification costs by 20%. It also eliminated email traffic for returns management and digitized numerous processes, eliminating unnecessary costs. All this was achieved without drastically modifying an already established organization, but rather by adapting technology to people's needs. The company thus began the process of transforming into a "4.0" reality, beginning by solving the most pressing issues that threatened to slow its growth and, over time, extending the corporate reorganization to other sectors not initially involved in its "digital revolution."
" Using cloud resources ," said Iñigo Perez Corella, president of Base Protection , " was the first step toward transforming our industry into a Manufacturing 4.0 reality. Together with our partner, we wanted to increase manufacturing competitiveness through digital. Innovating with intelligent technologies has allowed us to gain a competitive advantage in the market, create value locally, and at the same time access the best professionals without distance constraints. This is the great opportunity of cloud technology: expanding the choice of collaborators to achieve product excellence ."
According to Daniela Stolfi and Domenico Farano, Sales & Marketing Director and ICT Manager at Base Protection , " Base Protection's story and how it solved the problems associated with the company's rapid growth by rethinking its organizational and business processes is a great example of the use of digital technologies. We now have better management of credit lines, laboratory testing, and product development. We plan to continue the process of reorganizing and using the platform for other important activities, including the involvement of partners and suppliers in business processes ."
