Puglia has achieved a new record in the most advanced digital healthcare technologies.
This is the " Smart Health Platform ," the project with which AReSS Puglia participated (as leader of a team of technology partners including Openwork, Sincon, Tera, I-Tel, and the Fondazione Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza IRCCS healthcare facility) in the national competition announced by ProMIS – International Health Brick Program , which promotes regional healthcare in Europe and around the world.
In the competition titled "Agile Open Innovation Tools to Accelerate the Digital Transformation of Healthcare Processes and Products," Smart Health Platform won a valuable third place . The project addresses clinicians' needs for ongoing monitoring and remote care for chronically ill patients from their homes, enabling them to develop a digital , personalized diagnostic and therapeutic care plan (DTP) based on the health conditions of the patient being cared for by the healthcare facility.
At the heart of the Smart Health technological architecture is Jamio openwork , Openwork's cloud and “zero-code” BPM platform , which allows for the management and monitoring of the progress of the PDTA, the integration of teleassistance functions through the use of various multi-parametric devices and a Fitbit for sleep quality that patients are equipped with in order to verify the therapeutic adherence of patients suffering from chronic diseases.
The Smart Health was piloted in early 2020 (at the IRCCS "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" in San Giovanni Rotondo) on young multiple sclerosis patients treated from home. The results confirmed a qualitative improvement in the service provided through rapid and timely exchange of information between clinicians and patients.
According to Dr. Leone , the Smart Health Platform has great potential and could be used immediately at the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza Hospital to remotely monitor at least 60 chronically ill patients.
" The system has been validated to the complete satisfaction of both doctors and patients and has allowed for detailed tracking of the entire patient journey, providing valuable information at every stage, thus avoiding long periods of information gaps between follow-up visits," explains Dr. Maurizio Leone, Director of the Neurology Department at the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza IRCCS. " Furthermore , the platform allows us to detect drug side effects and changes in symptoms over time, allowing us to intervene effectively and promptly in therapy . "
AReSS Puglia also believed in the platform's potential from the beginning as a best practice for digitizing regional healthcare, so much so that it submitted its research project to the PROMIS Competition and chose to represent it as the lead project.
"We are very pleased that the PROMIS Open Innovation initiative, in which AReSS decided to participate, has led to the SmartHealthPlatform being awarded," says Giovanni Gorgoni , General Manager of AReSS Puglia. "The national initiative was preceded, only in Puglia and at AReSS's discretion, by an unprecedented dialogue with local healthcare innovation stakeholders. We were certain that good, implementable ideas already existed and just needed the right direction. And so it was. Now is the time to demonstrate that good ideas—even award-winning ones—can become everyday practices and tools for citizens, patients, and professionals. And just as we have not failed in our mission of discovering innovators, we will not fail now in the equally important mission of making things happen."
Openwork President Salvatore Latronico was also pleased :
" This award has a dual meaning. For Openwork, which has been committed to developing Business Process Management technologies for years, it recognizes our leadership and the validity of an intuition we have long believed in: that the application of these innovative technologies can be a major accelerator for the digitalization of healthcare systems. For the region, it confirms how integrating the skills and products of diverse organizations, according to digital ecosystem paradigms, is a strategic and rewarding approach. Given the clinical validation at Casa Sollievo, combined with the recognition from AReSS Puglia, which selected us for the national PROMIS competition, we look forward to expanding Smart Health testing in diverse contexts soon ."
