MAGAZINE NO. 24 Public Cloud: 2021 under the banner of a strongly growing trend

In 2021, worldwide spending on cloud services for end users is projected to grow by 23.1 percent.
This is Gartner 's latest forecast for the current year that confirms an upward trend triggered, in all likelihood, also by last year's pandemic, as stated by Sid Nag (VP Research - Gartner) who says that "Last year's events allowed CIOs to overcome any reluctance to move mission critical workloads from on-premise to the cloud. "

Although Covid-19 has given a decisive boost to public cloud growth, according to Sid Nag himself, " even in the absence of the pandemic there would still be a loss of appetite for data centers."
This tremendous growth in cloud service offerings is characterized by different market segments: foremost among them is SaaS (Software as a Service), which is expected to reach about $122.6 billion in spending this year, but there are also PaaS (Platform as a Service) and BPsaS (Business Process as a Services), which will see - as specified by Gartner - a total value of $59 billion and $50 billion (in 2021), respectively.

This major shift to the cloud stems from the need to adopt infrastructure in the enterprise that can govern complex workloads and, more importantly, generate a hybrid workforce, as confirmed again by Nag who emphasizes the strategic role of the cloud: "It will further evolve from serving pedestrian use cases such as infrastructure and application migration, to those that combine the cloud with technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things , 5G and more [...] In other words, the cloud will act as a glue between many other technologies that CIOs want to use more, enabling them to address more complex and emerging use cases."

The ISO 55000 standard defines an asset as any entity that has actual or potential value for an organization, be it machines, equipment, infrastructure, facilities, people, economic resources, etc. The same standard, moreover, explicates the concept of Asset management as the set of coordinated activities, carried out on the assets, capable of returning this value for an organization.
There are several ways and moments in which this value can be created, leading to financial returns, improved service levels, customer satisfaction, etc. To manage different assets, an organization must integrate and share business processes and define and provide guidelines, rules and responsibilities on them.
A variety of IT tools can be adopted to supportasset management, depending on the organizational context and the assets to be managed.
