Will the digitization of companies spell the end of human labor? Net of answers that analyze the ethical implications or those of the skills needed for the world of work in the near future, there is no doubt the development of the field of Robotic Process Automation, that is, the development of intelligent software designed for back office automation.
This is a technology that is widely used in the finance sector, in which there are numerous administrative tasks, performed by repetitive and time-consuming human actions, that a robot can complete more quickly, systematically, and sometimes correctly.
In the big world of digitization, RPA and business process management can brush up against each other and intertwine to optimize a company's work. In fact, the decision to include software to automate certain activities must be taken within a more general innovative framework, in which processes must first be analyzed, perhaps redefined with a lean perspective and workloads balanced; then it must be decided which procedures can be entrusted to machines.
Issues of data security and access and the reduction of verification and approval activities need to be addressed next. An automation plan, therefore, needs BPM tools and could yield optimal results if considered in a renewed view of business work that challenges processes and designs new ones.
RPA and BPM can be considered two sides of the same coin of digitization, as long as one considers similarities and differences of both. The two technologies, for example, deal with automation, but in the case of Business Process Management platforms or tools, there is an integration between activities entrusted to machines, technologies already used and the work of humans involved in the process, which is optimized and made more efficient.
On their side, on the other hand, Robotic Process Automation technologies give faster results in terms of return on investment made, but relying only on RPA to digitize one's business can mean implementing plans that are only half innovative.
